One Black Man’s Perspective

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Michael Brown. They have endured the horrific tragedy of losing their child. A nightmare no parent should ever have to face.

Unfortunately, this horrible tragedy can and should serve as a teaching moment for Americans.  The justice system is one of the foundational pieces of America. While many are outraged by the outcome and believe justice wasn’t served we need to remember the process. We need to be mindful that we were not privy to the testimony the grand jury heard. We need to be aware that our media tries people in the public far before cases ever reach the justice system. While the information released may lead us to believe that Officer Darren Wilson did not make the best choice, we need to really peel back the facts in the case and review what the grand jury heard. While this is a horrible tragedy, it is unfortunate that it has become an issue of race, vandalism, looting and arson. Let’s review the facts before we automatically assume racist intent.

Advocating For Change

This picture depicts advocates fighting back against the institutional corruption and injustice that exists in the government of Burkina Faso(Right), and Nigeria(Left/Fuel subsidy protest Jan. 2012). It is clear from the picture that the Burkina Faso citizen is steadfast in his beliefs and is willing to fight for what he believes is just and right. Unfortunately this is not the case with my fellow Nigerians. Day in and day out I hear about the need for a revolution in Nigeria. I fully agree, however, it seems to be a bunch of chatter.

We are charged with the responsibility to advocate for change and revolution. This advocacy is not just about lip service, it is about truly showing the steadfastness to stand up for what is right and not to waver in the face of adversity.

It is certainly not easy and definitely not popular but it is the right thing to do.
